Tinnitus is the name for the phantom noise, which many people across Canada hear in their ears, that nobody else can seem to hear at the same time. It manifests differently from person to person; some hear a constant noise that never goes away, while others notice it intermittently.  While tinnitus has no cure, it has many methods of treatment to help alleviate symptoms and bring relief. For some individuals who deal with severe tinnitus, their stress levels and sleep can be majorly affected, and relief can help them get some well-deserved rest and get back to their day-to-day lives without interruption.

What Is Tinnitus?

The noise in your ears is often a symptom of another underlying health condition, most commonly hearing loss challenges. Everyone cites a slightly different sound for their tinnitus, but some of the most common descriptors that we’ve seen include:

Tinnitus has no one common cause, but some of the more usual suspects include noise trauma, hearing loss, infection side effects, and blockages in the ear obstructing your hearing. While stress does not directly cause tinnitus, some individuals notice that during times of acute stress their tinnitus symptoms worsen.

How Do You Treat Tinnitus?

There are several ways to treat your tinnitus symptoms, so no matter what phantom sound you hear, you can find relief.  Hearing aids could provide substantial relief from tinnitus if your symptoms came as a result of hearing loss challenges; by enhancing your hearing with assistive technology, you’ll hear the sounds you once missed out on, and the new background noise will help mask your tinnitus.  There are several tinnitus retraining therapy (TRT) methodologies that can also help you retrain your brain to redirect its attention away from your tinnitus symptoms. With different forms of counselling techniques and sound therapies to listen to, you can help move your brain’s focus from the ringing, buzzing, or fluttering noise to something more pleasant.  Managing your tinnitus is a journey – one that professional hearing care can help guide you through. With the guidance of an expert team of hearing professionals, you can take control of your hearing health and say goodbye to your tinnitus symptoms for good.
